inCARrigible

March 4th, 2005

When my wife gave me the go ahead to get the car, she gave me carte blanche to get whatever I wanted. She even expressed no interest in picking the color.

I assumed, that after ten years of marriage, that I had earned the latitude to make major purchases on my own. My co-workers were amazed that I was given that much leeway on a new car. I was a little astonished myself, but I did try to get a color that I thought she would like.

But this is day seven with the TL and Chris has yet to sit in it, let alone drive it anywhere. On the several occasions this past week when she went out for the evening, I have suggested she take the “family sedan” (I don’t use the phrase “my pimping ride”). She always demurs and takes the three-year-old minivan.

It appears that what I took for latitude with the new car was really plain old apathy. She could actually care less about the car.

Several years ago, when I begged for months for a digital camera, Chris rationally noted that our point-and-shoot camera was in perfect condition and that we never used our Pentax SLR. Eventually I got a digital camera for myself for my own birthday and braced for the consequences. Within weeks it had become hers. She loved it and I was vindicated. Same thing with the laptop over Christmas. Chris uses it more than I do and it too appears to have been a wise purchase.

But I’m not getting that validation from her with the car. A better person wouldn’t need it, but sadly I do. This month’s Consumer Reports isn’t enough. I’d settle for “Hey Ken, the car doesn’t suck” at this point.
