Marissa wanted to play Ticket to Ride again with me last night (yeah!), but we needed to put Claire to bed beforehand, as she can bet quite disruptive when board games are being played.

Marissa readily accepted the delay, as it meant she got to stay up beyond her normal bedtime. While I changed Claire’s diaper and brushed her teeth, Marissa decided to read my latest copy of Newsweek.

Marissa, being in first grade, merely skimmed the magazine just looking at pictures. When the diapering was done, I turned to Marissa and she announced, pointing to the painting on page 46, that the picture on that particular page was her favorite.

"The Return of the Felines After the Circus" by Jean Leon Gerome

She liked it because it had animals. I didn’t point out to her the bloody dismembered body parts of Christians that are strewn across the Roman Coliseum floor.

It has been two months since our last alert, but we here at the Center for the Study of the Sexuality of Fictional Characters With No Apparent Gentalia have recently been informed that Spongebob Squarepants is gay. And not just in the carefree way.

This should have been obvious to us before because he is thin, neat, and unmarried, but it had not occurred to us at CSSFCWNAG that his relationship with Sandy Cheeks might be a ruse to cover for his more furtive proclivities.

We are re-doubling our efforts to monitor the activities of other cartoon characters. While we haven’t received independent confirmation yet, we fear that the Powerpuff Girls might be lesbians.

For the past year I’ve noticed a disappointing rise in intolerance so I wasn’t surprised that a study found some people are prejudiced against Muslims. What is surprising though is that is not a small fringe percentage, but a whopping 44% of Americans. Perhaps while we curtail their rights we should also have them sit at the back of public transportation and have them use separate drinking fountains.

Sadly I am no longer surprised when people want to boycott Macy’s simply because they use the “too” inclusive phrase Happy Holidays.

A friend of mine went to church this morning and was told it was a sin to vote the way he was planning on voting.

Claiming the support a single person is a sin in the name of the Bible seems blasphemous to me. We should be able to look at religious institutions as paragons of morality, not petty partisan name callers. Witchhunts should have ended centuries ago. I’m not sure wearing your religion on your sleeve is the best way to be a politician even if one were a Christian.

I think the Sojourners have it right on this one: God is Not a Republican. Or a Democrat. That site has Christian-inspired viewpoints that have been overlooked this political season.

In addition to being divisive within the congregation, the priest did something that violates his church’s tax-exempt status.

On page 8 of this IRS publication gives a handful of examples of what is against the law. My friend’s morning experience corresponds to the illegal activity in the fourth hypothetical example. And this is going on all over this U.S. this weekend.

I would encourage anyont to visit here for what they can do about it if your clegy starts advocating a particular candidate from the pulpit.

The Feds have received a threat from a religious cleric who recently was quoted on internationally broadcast TV saying ‘If I could just get a nuclear device inside Foggy Bottom, I think that’s the answer.’ He went on to say ‘We’ve got to blow that thing up.’ Government has strong indications that this clergy was referring to U.S. State Department’s headquarters located there.

The State Department has been aware for some time that this figure has financial ties to Liberia. Intelligence reports indicate that he supported its repressive leader Charles Taylor, who was recently ousted. U.S. troops are now policing the country as it recovers from the dictator.

The head of the State Department called his treats “despicable”, but the department is powerless to act in light of the laws in the religious figure’s country protecting his actions.

The religious leader’s comments on blowing up the State Department are documented here.
The religious leader’s comments supporting the Dictator are documented here.
